Prior to enabling recipient filtering, the Exchange server should either be running with the Edge Transport role configured, or if the Hub Transport role is installed, you will need to install the Anti-spam features.
Installing Anti-Spam features on a Hub Transport role server.
1. Open the Exchange Management Shell
2. Change the directory to C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Scripts
3. To install the Anti-spam features, run the following command:
4. Restart the Microsoft Exchange Transport service by using the following command:
5. Open the Exchange Management Console and confirm that the Anti-Spam tab is now available under Organization Configuration | Hub Transport.
Note: By installing Anti-Spam, some features are enabled by default. Ensure that you review these settings and disable any that are not required. Basically disable everything except recipient filtering ( you can re-enable later if you like).
Enabling Recipient Filtering:
1. Open the Exchange Management Console
2. Navigate to Organization Configuration | Hub Transport
3. Select the Anti-spam tab
4. Right-click on the Recipient Filtering option and select Properties:
Note: If you have a separate Edge Transport server in your environment, then the Anti-spam tab can be found under Organization Configuration | Edge Transport. However, most users we work with are set up as HUB transport.
5. Click on the Blocked Recipients tab and check the Block messages sent to recipients that do not exist in the directory option:
